Here's something I'm currently playing around with in my head and with paints. All drawn and painted freehand. I've taken the larger green one and altered it a bit in photoshop to how I want it to look and feel. Now I just have to create a large painted version of that green one and add figures etc. What I would like to do is an entire series of these. Hopefully I'll find some time, somewhere.. anywhere?

Each year Illustrators Australia hold a 9x5 exhibition. Where each member is sent a piece of ply wood 9x5 inches to paint their response or interpretation of a selected theme. This years theme is Rapture. The Exhibition will opening Friday night 14th October at Space 39 Gallery in Little Collins St. Melb.

So it's been a surreal few months. We are now finally in our new house! With more room to breath, run, play and work! There is still a lot to do and now it's nearly Christmas! I've been so busy working that I haven't had much chance to draw for myself lately. Today I snuck a quick one in. I miss the snow. Why does this guy look like he's about to dance a jig?

I think what I like about the show is watching people make choices, and then ask the people with the brief cases what they think they might have and then base their decision almost purely on that person's hunch! Some of those people must be actors with a secret head set being told what to say I reckon. You know you wanna go watch it... admit it!!

The characters are from the Boy Vs Beast series. I've been drawing a lot of beasts lately, so I thought I'd do some more.

As a warm up this morning I drew this skinny zombie like guy. I've been thinking a lot about food and famine lately and the way things are. Also been watching some great tv shows, Blood Sweat and T-Shirts and then Blood Sweat & Takeaway. Then I came across this quote the other day, which really hit it all home...

"You're rich if you've had a meal today." [Billy Graham]

So next time you're complaining about what you are going to cook, with a pantry full of this and that, be thankful that you are able to cook something!

The group was more of a warm down drawing to lunch time... it could even be a reaction to the first... hmmm...

Every morning we are woken early by these crazy birds outside our bedroom window. They are quite funny to watch. Arms/wings behind their backs jumping from spot to spot, eyeing you off quickly before hopping through the garden, then stopping, turning its head, it spies a worm in the ground (obviously using its xray vision) and yanks the blighter clean into the sky before making its final decent down the birds gullet. The worm didn't stand a chance.

Looking at this picture now at the end of the day, it looks kinda crap. Ah well, too bad. It's been a looong day.

Finally after 6 years, I can stop watching and thinking about, and trying to work out LOST. This week is the Final Finale!! The End! Game Over! Back to life..

I'm anticipating disappointment. But the ideas and characters the show created are great. Locke being by far the most tragic and interesting. Time to go read a book.

Last year my friend Kell and I created an animation sequence for the Christmas production at New Peninsula Church in Mornington. Here is the result. It ended up being a bit more work than we anticipated, even though it was simple cut out animation. We used various photos and textures from paintings, fabric, papers, concrete etc to make all the different elements and had a lot of fun producing it!

This last 2 weeks has been very busy as we tackle the issue of selling our house and buying a new place and moving, all of which may or may not happen, but it is already stressful. And at the same time this week I am finishing off work on my first UK job! And roughs for colouring books, plus new Boy vs Beast books. Keep an eye out for those soon too. Library Launched

Today I spent a couple of hours at the Library launch at the Frankston Youth Resource Centre trying to draw quick cartoon portraits for the kids there (and some adults). It was a great experience and I really enjoyed my time there chatting with kids and seeing their reactions to how I scribbled them. I'm very grateful to have been asked to come and help out and hope that everyone was happy with the pictures.

So here is a really quick(10min) sketch of all the team that work there. Sorry guys.

Sumo Madness!

Great news! Sumo Mouse is finally on air!! Air being Tv air. First episode airing 27th March 2010, Saturday morning 8:30am Network Ten. Mark your diaries and cancel all prior engagements! Or if you're an illustrator like me you might be attending the BIG 3 seminar and will just have to record it. Heck, even if you can watch it, record it anyway and watch it again to see all the backgrounds and props we created at Kyla May.

On an absolutely unrelated note, 2 girls came around today with a picture of their lost dog. I hadn't spoken to anyone all day so it was a little weird trying to string sentences together. Especially when they showed the photo of a labrador and all I could think was, it looks like every other labrador I have ever seen in my life. The skinnier girl then proceeded to describe the dog as short and ' a keg on legs'. That'll make it a little easier to spot I guessed, as I then glanced at the fatter of the two girls. My words stuttering out at the sight of the potholes in her forehead. It was an interesting exchange of words with neighbours I never knew I had.

Anyway if you happen to be walking the streets of Mornington this week and spot a blonde labrador that's oddly shaped like a keg and answers to the trusty name of Buster, don't hesitate to let me know, because I'd really like to see this keg dog. And of course help return poor Buster.

One day I'll put up some new drawings too. It's been a busy summer. And now it's nearly Easter!

the 39 steps

We went and watch the theatrical comedy version of Hitchcock's 'The 39 Steps' on Friday night.
Inspirational.
It was such an enjoyable show. Clever and extremely funny. The four actors that played all the rolls were so believable! If you get a chance to see it, GO!

Theatre has an element of inspiration to it that you don't often get from movies or tv. The characters are there in front of you and you listen and watch them and are more involved some how. I guess because it's real.

Here's some images just finished for easter and st patricks day. Time seems to be rocketing along again and the year feels like it will soon be over. On the 2nd of January we saw the very first easter eggs appear in the supermarkets too! From one consumer infestation to the next!! At least you can buy cream eggs this time of year.

Hey, thanks for the comments on the routine picture! They were very positive and encouraging. I haven't played with any ink yet to make some brushes, hopefully soon.

Anyway here is a sketch for this week. With the word memories, all I could think of was the Neverending Story where the evil lady (I dont remember their names) She was taking the boys memories, and they were in glass balls. I was going to do something along those lines, then I drew this.

This week I have been getting in to photoshop brushes and fonts! I can't believe I haven't investigated different brushes before! And the fact that they are so easy to make is cool. I'm going to try and experiment soon with making a set of brushes. I love textures.
Anyway, I thought it was time to submit something to Illustration Friday! Routine is a word that has been creeping in to my life just recently. Thankfully I haven't had to catch a bus for a while though :) This is just a page out of my sketch book with one bit coloured in ps.

For those who don't know, the olympics starts tomorrow in China. Tonight actually if you count the Soccer, which I most certainly do! If you're in Australia you may have seen channel 7's promos for the Olympics. Cheesy? Did I hear someone say cheesy? Did I hear someone say, "Hey it must have taken some guy all night to think of have athletes being athletic on the great wall of china!".

Thankfully one country got it right. England. Who else really? The creative team that brought us Gorillaz have been busy with the great Monkey! Anyway the link's above. I didn't do the picture above, so I take no credit. They are the brilliant stylisings of Jamie Hewlett.

It's Great to be Nak-ed

I spent a couple of hours today getting this drawn up and coloured, after throwing the ideas around in my head for a few days. The little nemos are playing hide and seek..
2 of the greatest things in the world, being naked and swimming in warm tropical water with fishes, now brought together in a what-could-be dangerous undertaking. Swim away! I don't mean from the jelly's mind you, I'm referring to having ya pecker dangling like bait.. sheesh!

So today is Valentines day. When you are supposed to go out and buy flowers that die and chocolates that get eaten or thrown in your face because they make ya fat stupid! Anyway I don't want to rant about the money making day of Vday. I just want to put up some pictures. So here ya go.

Thought I'd do something for Illustration Friday, seeing as I haven 't done so for a while. The fish in my studio helped me out a little with this one. Although I think the line drawing did look better than the coloured version.

To grey or not to grey

I've been doing a few ink drawings lately. But I can't work out what is best when putting it onto computer. Whether to keep with a colour scan so the image looks close to the original or make that scan grayscale so that it is more uniform and clean. I wonder what other people do. Let me know what you would do.

I know I'm 3 weeks late, but Happy 2008, anyway!

Time seems to be increasing in speed each day. I'm not entirely sure where the past few months have gone. I'm looking forward to 2008. The number has something about it. The olympics are on this year too. And Lost will return to tv in a couple of weeks. For the beginning of the year, I thought I would share some ink sketches I played with just the other day. If all goes well I'll do some more finished illustrations in ink for some books this year. It's a pleasant most welcome change from sitting at the wretched computer all the time.

It's very wet and cold here today. But that doesn't stop the wheels of industry. Got a few pages of comics done for a publisher and now getting reday to eat noodles and playa few rounds of bomberman on xbox live. Then it's back to work probably. Today I'm posting a couple of warm up sketches I did. One is a character from the pages I am working on, the other guy is just some angel dude. Hope you like them.

A Full 360 Wii

Yay it's the weekend! Time for serious xbox and wii action! I finally got hooked up to xbox live on 360. So great to be able to play Gears of War against friends online. It's also great to be able to download game demos. Played through demo of Bioshock. That game is crazy!

For your viewing pleasure a quick robot sketch. I think I'll do some more robots again later.
